In this article, we shed light on Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC), a critical benefit for eligible survivors of deceased veterans.
What is Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC)?
DIC is a monetary benefit provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to eligible survivors of service members who died because of their military service or service-connected disabilities. This compensation serves as a financial lifeline for spouses, children, and dependent parents left behind.
Who is Eligible?
- Spouses: A surviving spouse may be eligible if the marriage to the deceased veteran meets certain criteria, including duration and timing.
- Children: Unmarried children under the age of 18 (or 23 if attending school) may qualify. In some cases, certain disabled adult children may also be eligible.
- Dependent Parents: Parents who were financially dependent on the deceased veteran may be eligible for DIC.
The Application Process:
- Gather Documentation: Collect relevant documents such as the veteran's death certificate, marriage certificate, children's birth certificates, and financial records.
- Complete VA Form 21P-534EZ: This form is the Application for DIC, Death Pension, and/or Accrued Benefits. Accurate and complete information is crucial for a smooth application process.
- Submit the Application: Once the form is filled out, submit it to the VA. Our team can assist you in ensuring that all necessary documents accompany your application.
- Await VA Processing: The VA will review your application, which may take some time. Our firm will keep you informed throughout the process.
- Navigating the DIC application process can be complex, but with the Veteran’s Legal Center by your side, you can streamline the journey.
